The Value of the Heart Symbol
The heart symbol is omnipresent in so many cultures. Our charms and vintage jewelry prove that they’ve always been in popular culture. We have heart dangle earrings, bordered heart dangle earrings, and let’s not forget the classic heart pendant. So the heart symbol is constantly reproduced in art and culture. But does that mean that the heart symbol also has some significance or power related to an amulet of love?
Love and romance-themed incantations often featured heart symbols, which were popular with magicians and alchemists. The symbol was also employed in rituals meant to fortify bonds between people.
The Universal and Most Accurate Symbol of Love
A universal symbol of love, generosity, happiness, and compassion, the heart has been revered throughout history and across cultures. The “Sacred Heart” of Christ, which Roman Catholics revere as a representation of the Lord’s love, is also a symbol of truth. When drawn as an inverted triangle, this graphic represents a container for the conveyance of love.
To visualize the heart in geometry, think of an inverted triangle. So, it carries heavy connotations. It is common knowledge (thanks mainly to blockbuster films like The Da Vinci Code) that the inverted triangle symbolizes the divine feminine or feminine power in esoteric symbology. For example, the Muladhara, or base chakra, represents an inverted triangle.
This symbol represents sexual power, and perhaps, it is the central source of all power. Its one (inverted) point is what sparks the fire that sends waves of energy, heating the rest of the chakra spine. Similarly, the solar plexus (Manipura), heart (Anahata), throat (Vishudha), and third eye (Ajna) chakras all take the shape of an inverted triangle.
You’re probably aware of chakras, the seven energy wheels that run from the top of your head to the base of your spine.
If you spin your chakras in the correct direction, you’ll open yourself up to the free flow of Qi energy. Your health is at risk if stressful thoughts and feelings stall these vital energy processes. Anahata, the fourth chakra, is situated in the chest area. If it gets blocked or clogged, forming and maintaining positive connections with others can be challenging. So, how can you tell if your heart chakra is blocked? How do you get it unblocked, by the way?
The word “Anahata” has several meanings in Sanskrit, all involving being unharmed. It is the seat of self-love, other-love, compassion, empathy, and forgiveness, and thus the fourth primary chakra. Unconditional love, compassion, and joy are all qualities associated with the Anahata chakra. It is the wellspring from which truths are so profound that they defy verbalization. Anahata connects the physical world with the spiritual realm.
The element air corresponds to the chakra Anahata. (The first chakra represents the earth; it is stable and dependable; the second chakra represents water; it brings fertile creativity, and the third chakra represents the “fire in the belly” necessary to transform that grounded creativity into constructive action.)
Spiritual wisdom about love, compassion, and the connection is like air; it spreads and blends with everything you encounter. Just as air is inside and outside of us, so is love. We can embody this quality by keeping our emotional centers unblocked and our love unrestricted.
Green, the transition and love energy color, is associated with the Anahata chakra. As the chakras’ vibrations are reflected in the colors and symbols, so is their energy. The associated colors and symbols emerged when the ancient rishis meditated on the chakras’ energy.
Feelings of love, compassion, and joy, as well as a sense of oneness with the world, will surround you when your heart chakra is balanced. Challenges, especially in relationships, will seem to flow through you and be quickly resolved, and you’ll have a general sense of being open to all of life’s experiences.
Having a fully activated heart chakra means feeling a deep sense of belonging to oneself, one’s loved ones and the natural world. The ability to love and accept oneself, including physical form, is enhanced by opening this chakra and turning the focus inward.
Also associated with the element water are inverted triangles. Why? That credit goes to Aristotle. He decided triangles made up the fundamentals of our existence (fire, earth, air, water, aether). The heart symbol is also undeniably present in the human form. The bosom with cleavage and the female posterior is both undeniably heart-shaped. The heart serves as a tangible symbol of the female body.
This is consistent with the theories of Da Vinci, Aristotle, and Galen. They are said to have depicted the human body using simplified pictographs, with the heart serving as a model for the female body. Sensuality, passion, emotion, and nurturing are just some cool things that the heart symbol (in its feminine sense) can represent.
